The geographical diversity of North Carolina ranges from sweeping vistas and bucolic forests of the Great Smokey Mountains to expansive windswept dunes of the Atlantic ocean. As a result, prominent architects have enthusiastically come here to shape the land with their artistry designing over 600 golf courses.  No where is this more on display than at the the private upscale coastal golf community of St James Plantation.

Although much larger than typical golf communities with 4500 property owners on 6000 acres of coastal landscape, St James Plantation doesn’t feel big.  Common marina, beach club and hiking/biking trails are low key. The separate golf communities have their own unique character.

Troon Golf manages seventy private golf clubs in the US including St. James Plantation.  As a result, if you’re a member of one of those clubs, the Troon Privé program allows reciprocal play at another Troon managed private club.  In that case, with some tee time limitations, play is free except for a cart fee.  Guests fees are reasonable.

A full service marina provides immediate access to the immense 3000 mile Intracoastal Waterway with endless opportunities for boating, fishing, water-sports and bird or wildlife watching.

Then again, sip a Chardonnay at Tommy Thompson’s Grille and watch the sun set over the harbor.  Or spend a leisurely day by the sea at the private St. James Beach Club on the adjacent Oak Island.Launched in 1981, Founder and visionary Homer Wright wanted to create “a place where your family couldn’t wait to get to”.  Beginning with the Founder’s Club, St James Plantation has beautifully developed with each new community.  Each clubhouse is uniquely magnificent in it’s own way.

St James Plantation courses maintain a close connection to the natural landscape through the use of minimalist features. Indeed the rustic wooden cart path bridges attractively integrate the landscape with the courses.

Nicklaus, Cate, Dye and Irwin created four impressive golf courses – The Reserve Club, The Players Club, The Founders Club and The Members Club – within one prestigious community.  each golf community boasts its own clubhouse with unique and distinctive styles. An abundance of water hazards coupled with strong bunkering characterizes the challenging Reserve Club course.  Indeed, the Reserve Club is perennially ranked in the top 10% of the state.

Beside the courses are magnificent homes usually positioned in an unobtrusive way. Likewise, a sizable welcome center is classic southern plantation style.

The St James Plantation properties are decidedly well manicured and landscaped  St James Plantation may be the finest community on the Atlantic Coast in the Carolinas. For one thing golfers are not routinely overwhelmed by the strong afternoon winds and endless sand typical of many coastal courses.  The courses are first class, the clubhouses are unique and impressive in their own right.  The availability of beach and marina activities is a major plus.00
